President's Review

President's Review

A warm welcome back after the summer break.

Although this review is a little shorter than for other months, that shouldn’t make you think that less is happening with DASLS.

We still remain active, and continue to represent, promote and support the membership, even though half the profession seems to have upped sticks and moved to warm climes for the summer months.

Most have now arrived back on native shores, with some having been hounded to return by our Euro cousins! The people from across the water, or those I have spoken to at least, still can’t believe we decided to leave – but there you go.

Brexit

Brexit remains high on the agenda, although the detail still has to filter down. No doubt Teresa May will give a clearer steer on Article 50 in the coming months, although there seems to be something of a constitutional wrangle over where it is for the Prime Minister/Government using royal prerogative to trigger Article 50, or if there is a need for full parliamentary approval from both Houses, meaning that a debate and vote would be required.  Time will tell, but I can see the lawyers getting their teeth stuck in, even before the starter’s gun has gone off.

Olympics

In contrast to the uncertainty over Brexit, was the complete certainty of how fantastic the GB Olympics Team was in Rio. A truly remarkable feat to beat China into second place in the medals haul, and also surpass our tally from London 2012.

I know sport and law don’t always mix, but I think we can all take inspiration from the commitment shown by our athletes – a truly remarkable feat. And of course our esteemed Honorary Secretary, Chris Hart, was himself out in Rio performing an arbitration role. Welcome home Chris.

Awards

As you know, the 2017 Legal Awards and Annual Dinner takes place on 2nd March next year at Sandy Park, Exeter, and competition is likely to be high. So I urge you all to start preparing your entries early – we all love a deadline, but why not remove the stress, and avoid the last minute rush.

Again this year we have a launch event, this time to be held at Deer Park Country Club, Honiton, later this month. SOS Software are already on-board as headline sponsor, with a number of other high-profile parties committed, but no doubt the formal launch will boost the visibility of the Awards, and see a number of others join up.

You will have seen the extensive coverage the Awards are receiving in the media, and this will only increase in the months to come.

PR and marketing

As part of our on-going marketing strategy, which was developed in conjunction with Wall-to-Wall Sunshine, you will, I hope, have noted recent articles in the local press about the benefits of using a solicitor, and how DASLS’ members can assist. This drive will continue, with focus on a number of different areas within the legal sector. Please don’t think we are concentrating on just one or two areas; we will try and cover as many as possible, although it may take a little time to achieve this.

It is comforting to see that The Law Society are embarking on a similar venture nationally, through the Solicitor Brand campaign - DASLS got in there first though! – and if you or your colleagues have ideas, or appropriate stories and case-studies we could use to emphasise the importance of using a (DASLS) solicitor, please feed them through to Tony Steiner.

Home and abroad

As we move into the autumn months, a number of representative engagements are in my diary for events locally, nationally, and internationally, and I shall report back on them as and when they arise.

Sub-Committees

Our Sub-Committees continue to work hard, dealing with the various issues thrown up by the SRA and The Law Society, and matters related to DASLS and its membership. If any of you would like to join any of the Committees, please let me or the office know. I have certainly developed a greater understanding of the issues and concerns of the profession directly as a result of my involvement with the Committees, and I would urge you all to take a similar interest.

Events

Turning to future events. We have our Practice Management Conference coming up on 16th November. All of you who have any management responsibility should attend the Conference as I know you will find it enlightening, entertaining, and value for money. Please spread the word and encourage attendance.

Somerset Dinner

Finally, and to end on a lighter note, the Annual Somerset Dinner at the County Cricket Club, Taunton, is fast approaching - Friday 11th November should already be in your diaries. I very much hope you and other members will support this Dinner, as it promises to be a fascinating and fun evening. We have Haydn Kelly as guest speaker, who, for those who don’t know, is a world expert in gait forensics – the identification of persons by the style and features of their walk – and its application to the detection of criminals. I plan on arriving by scooter, to mask my criminal limp!

See you all at the Dinner.
