President's Review

President's Review

By the time you read this, my last Review, I’ll have jumped out of a plane (probably), experienced the splendour of the second Legal Awards and Dinner (definitely), and been and gone to Barcelona without incident (hopefully).

My Presidential year has flown by, and I am a better, but more exhausted, man for it. But before I get into my final update, I should mercilessly plug my chosen Charity of the year, the North Devon Hospice, because it’s probably the last chance I’ll get!

I’m sure we all know someone who has been affected by terminal illness, in one way or another, and the support that the Hospice provides for patients and their families is absolutely phenomenal, but as you’d expect, it does come at a price. The Hospice has to raise over £4.5m every year, from scratch, and every penny raised really makes a difference.

I’ve been trying to contribute in numerous ways throughout the year: from taking part in quizzes, running across Exmoor on a freezing cold November morning, to stupidly agreeing to throw myself out of a plane. If you haven’t done so already, can you please all put your hands in your pockets one last time and help me support the Hospice; either that, or your generous donations will go towards my rehabilitation, if I’ve managed to break my arm/leg/dignity.

Hopefully you won’t mind me posting the link to my Virgin Giving page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/MarkRoome.

If you can, please give something; and if you can’t, go and have a word with the partner in charge of your department, as they’re clearly not paying you enough.

The last couple of months have been fairly busy, but March will be something of a pinch-point for me with numerous engagements and events all coming together, but you’ll have to wait and hear about most of them from your new President in May’s Review.   I’ll try and be brief, as you’ll also have to endure separately my President’s Report for the AGM papers – aren’t you a lucky bunch!

Awards and Annual Dinner

At the time of print, the Awards and Dinner should have taken place, and I’m sure the evening was as spectacular as we were all hoping for. There will probably be a full set of photos somewhere after this Review, and so congratulations to all the 2017 Winners. I should, at this point, also say a “thank you” to our media partner, DC Media. They have supported us over the last two years, and will hopefully do so again next year.

The coverage and input they have provided has been second-to-none, and I am personally indebted to Michelle and her team for helping us bring together such an excellent event. Thank you again.

Brexit

Article 50 a go! It looks like Teresa May has the green light to invoke Article 50, although the Lords may still throw a spanner in the works. At the time of writing, they were in the middle of debating the Bill, and I will have to leave it to others to bring you up to speed on the final outcome, and how it will, or is likely to, affect our members. Interesting times ahead.

Home and abroad

On the home front, I will be attending the next meeting of the Association of South Western Law Societies (ASWLS) on 9th March, and we have the open meeting with Neil Buckley (Chief Executive of the LSB) on 27th March. All members are welcome to attend, and I would urge you all to do so in light of the recent announcement that the LSB will be reviewing the existing arrangements of the Law Society having oversight of the independent regulator, the Solicitors Regulation Authority. The meeting is due to take place at 2.00 p.m. at the offices of Michelmores in Exeter, and I look forward to seeing you there.

During my last couple of weeks, I will also be attending the Legal Service in Wells Cathedral for those concerned with the Administration of Justice in Somerset, and also representing DASLS at the Chartered Accountants’ South West dinner at Sandy Park, Exeter.

Combined with the quarterly Committee Meeting in Torquay on 7th March, the usual meetings of the Sub-Committees, and the AGM in April all adds up to a fairly frantic couple of weeks.

On the international front, I attended the 25th Anniversary celebrations of the FBE(Fédération des Barreaux d´Europe) in Barcelona towards the end of February, which included discussions with other delegates on the chosen topics for the meeting: protection and promotion of the rights of the child, and asylum and the rights of minor refugees.   Although I wasn’t able to contribute much from a technical point of view – being a commercial solicitor - it was apparent that DASLS is very well respected as a local Law Society, and the links that have been created over the years are the envy of many.

Hopefully the reputation of DASLS will continue to be enhanced through these links, particularly in the challenging (post-Brexit) times ahead, when building relationships and networking with other professional bodies will, I am sure, need to be a priority.

The DASLS team at Aston Court

The team at DASLS has undergone a further reshuffling, and we have another new member, Francesca Hobbs. No doubt Francesca will be a welcome addition and will be able to support Tony and Monique, the rest of the Administrative Team, and of course your new President (as of the AGM), Sue Aggett.

End

So thank you all for making my Presidency a unique and fulfilling experience, and in particular to Tony, Monique, Chris and Richard for your considerable support and help.

I’m sure Sue will be a more than able successor, and I wish her a thoroughly enjoyable year.

All the best.

Mark Roome

President
